Delhi Court rejects Ankeet Chavan's bail plea

Rajasthan Royals cricketer Ankeet Chavan’s plea seeking bail to get married on June 2 was yesterday rejected by a Delhi Court which sent co-accused S Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila to judicial custody till June 4 in the IPL spot fixing case.

Rejecting Chavan’s plea, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Lokesh Kumar Sharma said: “Social sentiments have no place... I don’t deem it appropriate to admit him to regular or interim bail.”

Lawyer for Chavan, who is in judicial custody till June 4, said his marriage date was close and he needed to attend the ceremonies.

Along with Sreesanth and Chandila, the court also sent two bookies Ashwini Aggarwal and Chandresh Patel to judicial custody till June 4.

The New Delhi court rejected a police application to extend their custody of Sreesanth to allow them more time to investigate the case, instead remanding both players to Tihar jail.

“It’s not a setback,” Sreesanth’s lawyer Rebecca John said of the court’s decision. “The best part is that he’s out of police custody.”

Two bookmakers were also placed in judicial custody. “The application seeking extension of police custody is dismissed. He (Sreesanth) is sent to judicial custody till the fourth of June,” Judge Lokesh Kumar Sharma told the court.

Sreesanth, who has denied wrongdoing, appeared composed during the court hearing.

Police say the trio were acting under orders from international crime syndicates to deliberately bowl badly in specific overs after striking deals with bookmakers.

BCCI picks two retired judges for IPL commission
The IPL governing council has appointed a three-member commission comprising two former high court judges and BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale to investigate and decide whether BCCI president N Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was an owner of the Chennai Super Kings franchise.

The two judges are Justice R Balasubramanian, former judge of the Tamil Nadu High Court and Justice T Jayaram Chouta, a former judge of the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu High Courts.

“The Commission will be initiating the adjudication proceedings at the earliest,” the BCCI said in a statement.u00a0
