Former India and Mumbai cricketer Suru Nayak, the Cricket Operations manager of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has left the organisation with a heavy heart.

The disappointment of leaving the BCCI was evident when the 59-year-old posted on his Facebook page yesterday: “Retired from BCCI and its politics!”.

Nayak’s contract with the Indian board ended in June and was not renewed. “I emailed the Board secretary (Sanjay Patel) and also called him. But he did not reply to my email nor did he answer my call. Another employee of the Board told me that the management has decided not to renew my contract,” Nayak, who joined the BCCI in 2007, told mid-day yesterday.

Support on social media
When asked about the politics he was referring to, Nayak said: “I don’t want to comment on it. People who know will understand.”

Nayak found support on the social networking site for his post. Salil Ankola, former India pacer and Nayak’s teammate at Sungrace Mafatlal, wrote: “Dada it’s not over till you say its over... I know you will rock.”
Avdhoot Zarapkar, Nayak’s former colleague at Nirlons and the Mumbai Ranji team, said: “Best wishes to you Suru! I know you can never retire.”

Nayak’s brother Shashi, also a cricketer, wrote: “One door has closed, not out of your volition, but, next door will open for you very soon. Relax and be fitter to bat straight, as always.”

Nayak said he would look for other avenues in cricket administration. “Right now I don’t know what I will do. But cricket administration is something I would love to be involved in,” he said.
