UK-based former India wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer has supported Sunil Gavaskar's opinion that Mohinder Amarnath would have been a better choice than former England coach Duncan Fletcher as India coach.
"I fully agree with Sunil. I have nothing against Fletcher, but honestly what will he add to this Indian team? Though his coaching credentials are proven, his record as a cricketer is very poor. He has not even played Test cricket. What is he going to teach our batsmen," Engineer told MiD DAY from Lancashire, yesterday.
Gavaskar backed Amarnath for his fabulous record.
"He has got a fabulous record of making comebacks. He knows what it is to be down and then come back up," Gavaskar told NDTV news channel on Wednesday.
He insisted that Amarnath would have made a good choice as he is better equipped to understand the psyche of Indian cricketers than a foreigner.
"Mohinder Amarnath for example is one himself, who for the simple reason that the core of the Indian team today comes from the Hindi belt. And I think Jimmy would get along brilliantly with them, said Gavaskar.
Engineer however, disagreed on this aspect. "Gary Kirsten never spoke Hindi, but he still did wonders to Indian cricket. So, that's not the right thing to say," said 73-year-old Engineer.
