Spain entered the quarter-finals, after a 1-0 win against Croatia on Monday, as Group C toppers with seven points and will face Group D runners-up next. Jesus Navas scored the winner. Spain had a sloppy start, and settled for a 1-1 draw against Italy in the Group C opener. They then showed glimpses of their 2008 Euro and 2010 World Cup winning form, with a convincing 4-0 thrashing of Ireland in the build up to Monday’s game
“I’m rooting for Spain to win the championship, like they won the World Cup in 2010. Also, I feel that Spain, France, Portugal and one lesser known team (Greece or Czech Republic) might make the semi-final cut,” said Vijayan (43), better known as Indian football’s black pearl.
Vijayan is in the city to promote Football Development Foundation’s (FDF) inaugural football marathon to be held on June 24.
