Roger Federer's historic win in the French Open on Sunday has seen him close the gap on Rafael Nadal at the top of the ATP world rankings.

Going into Paris the Swiss star was 4,490 points adrift of the Spaniard who replaced him as world number one after winning Olympic gold in Beijing last August.

That gap has been cut to 2070 points and opens up the possibility that Federer could regain the top spot over the next few weeks dependent on the results at Wimbledon where Nadal is the defending champion, but currently battling against a knee injury.

Nadal, who had won the four previous French Opens, lost in the 4th round to Sweden's Robin Soderling.

Soderling, who lost in straight sets to Federer in the final, is up to a career best 12th from 25th, while semi-finalists Juan Martin del Potro and Fernando Gonzalez both consolidated their positions in the top 10.
