Daredevils owner GM Rao's humble beginning may be capped off by acquiring English giants Liverpool

According to a report in the News of the World, representatives of the GMR group, owned by Grandhi Mallikarjun Rao, met with Anfield officials last week.

They sat alongside the American co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett in the Anfield directors' box for the 4-4 draw with Arsenal.

The 58-year-old Rao had the most humble of beginnings in a nondescript town in Andhra Pradesh (see box) and it may really be a fairy-tale story if he manages to acquire one of the world's biggest football clubs.

The group is looking to expand into the sports investments and the IPL endeavour was the first of many according to the report.

The talks come as Hicks and Gillett must soon refinance the u00a3350m loan which enabled them to buy the club.

The NOTW report also goes on to suggest that GMR view Liverpool as a perfect investment opportunity and that they are keen to move into English football.

"The GMR group were invited by Hicks, and their representative watched the Arsenal match with Hicks' son Tommy," claims the paper's source. "It was quite clear the representative was a fan.

"When you look at the company's commitment to sport, they're exactly the type of partner Tom would be looking for."

The report also said that Hicks originally made contact with GMR with a view to discussing a sponsorship deal, but that this could now lead to a buy-out. Liverpool's American owners have been scouring the globe for finance to stave off the threat of having to sell the club on the cheap in July.
