Heynckes wanted to see a reaction from his side after they effectively lost the Bundesliga title in their last two games, and he believes he got it. “My players showed what I had demanded from them yesterday: lust and hunger for success,” he told Sky television. “I think we more than deserved the win because we played cleverly and intelligently.”
Madrid looked to have earned a 1-1 draw from their trip to Germany after Ozil’s 53rd-minute goal had cancelled out Franck Ribery’s first-half opener for Bayern, but the Bundesliga giants netted a 90th-minute winner through Mario Gomez. That goal will have boosted Bayern’s belief that they can progress through to a ‘home’ final at their Allianz Arena. Bayern take a one-goal advantage with them to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu next Wednesday.
