Home Ministry rejects revised IPL dates

The Home Ministry today rejected the revised dates for the second edition of the Indian Premier League, stressing that the revised schedule was not practical enough to be implemented.

The hosting of the IPL has come under the scanner since it clashes with the general elections due to be held in the same period. The main reason of concern is security which the government will have to provide in plenty to ensure that the cream of international cricketers are safe.

Security became a huge concern after the terror attcaks in Mumbai last November and the recent Lahore attack where the Sri Lankan cricketers were targetted.

The ministry said states wanted more paramilitary forces to host IPL, which was not possible.

Home Minister P Chidambaram today had a meeting with top security personnel to decide whether the cricket extravaganza can go ahead as per schedule in April.
