Speaking over his mobile from Melbourne after Dhoni announced his retirement from the longest version of the game, Ayub said, “Dhoni will travel with the team to Sydney as a non-playing member. “Yes, we were all surprised by Dhoni’s decision which he didn’t even hint about before the game began today. We had no idea what he would do after the game. After the game, he came into the dressing room and announced his decision to quit Test cricket,” he said.
Dhoni gets emotional
However, Ayub did not reveal whether anyone from the team tried to persuade Dhoni to stay on as Test captain. “Leave it there please, but I can say it was an emotional decision and nobody including new captain Virat Kohli was happy with his decision. “He wanted to leave on high and was the most respected and admired captain. We have to respect his decision,” said Ayub whose stint as manager will end after the fourth Test in Sydney.
