Green Park is a special venue for Mahendra Singh Dhoni. After all, the glovesman made his debut as Test captain here 19 months ago when Anil Kumble was ruled out for the Test against South Africa. However, Dhoni found himself in a spot of bother yesterday, thanks to an injury picked during the first Test, which prompted the team management to summon Dinesh Karthik as a back-up.
"After a request from the team management, Karthik has been asked to join the team as a precautionary measure," Prof Ratnakar Shetty, Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Chief Administrative Officer, told MiD DAY last night.
Though the India skipper had a long stint with the bat yesterday, he did not wear the' keeping gloves at all. A source said Dhoni will be passed fit, but it will be interesting to see if the skipper makes himself available as a specialist batsman.
If Dhoni is deemed fit, Karthik, who reached here last night, will return to play for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy.
