Wayne Rooney expressed his delight after Manchester United's impressive 5-0 win over Fulham on Wednesday night and insisted his side are ready to capitalise on any slip-up from title rivals Manchester City.

Rooney scored United's fourth in what was his 300th Premier League appearance, becoming the youngest player to reach that landmark.

The champions will have to settle with being second at Christmas after City's 3-0 win over Stoke City ensured they will lead the top-flight at Christmas for the first time since 1929 after wrapping up all three points courtesy of two goals from Sergio Aguero either side of a strike from Adam Johnson.

City are ahead of United by two points. Rooney told BBC: "It has been an amazing turnaround in our away form. We have two home games coming up, so we need to keep pushing and if City slip up we will be there waiting." Ryan Giggs, Danny Welbeck, Nani and Dimitar Berbatov were also on target.
