Virender Sehwag has stressed that he said nothing to undermine the brilliance of Mahendra Singh Dhoni as captain when he spoke about the quality of the Indian teams which won the World T20 in 2007 and the 50-50 over World Cup last year.
“Dhoni got a very strong team. When you get a strong team, it is easier to perform well just like Australia did at one point of time. We won World Cup because we had a very strong team which was ably backed by Dhoni's leadership,” Sehwag was quoted as saying at the inauguration of former stumper Syed Saba Karim’s academy in Noida.

Later, Sehwag told MiD DAY: “I don’t know why the media is creating a controversy. I said that we had good teams for both the World Cups, plus had a good captain which is essential to win big tournaments.”
Sehwag’s view on the media may be justified, but Dhoni and he have had their differences which started on the 2007-08 tour of Australia. Sehwag also tweeted: “Unfortunate when a comment is twisted to make it newsworthy. Gist of what I said: we had a great team and thus we have won 2 WCups under MSD.”
