The sports ministry yesterday de-merged the National Institute of Sports (NIS) from its parent body the Sports Authority of India (SAI) after six of the eight athletes training at the premier institute in Patiala flunked dope tests.
Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken said that NIS Patiala will now become an autonomous body and will be producing better home grown coaches. "We have decided to de-merge NIS Patiala from the SAI and it is being done to make it an institution of national importance. The primary role for NIS would be to produce world class and qualified coaches for various sporting disciplines," said Maken.
