Tata Group has denied any interest in sponsoring English and European champions Manchester United.
Reports appeared last week about the Old Trafford-based club approaching the Indian conglomerate to pick up the sponsorship tab after United's four-year, $100 million jersey contract with AIG ends. The current contract runs until May 2010, but the insurance firm said in January that it would not be renewing the deal.
"Tatas do not have any intention of sponsoring any football clubs at this point of time. Manchester United's marketing team which is on a visit to India sought for a meeting from the Tatas and we have granted a hearing as a courtesy. There is no formal proposal or plans whatsoever related to the same," a Tata Sons spokesperson conveyed to MiD DAY in a statement yesterday.
Tatas are already on the sporting scene. Tata Consultancy Services, the software wing of the group, is one of the sponsors of the Ferrari Formula One team.
Manchester Unitedu00a0 reportedly sent a shirt sponsorship proposal to Sahara Group in January earlier this year.
