Ranji Trophy: Prithvi Shaw is gutted over missing double century

Mumbai's talented youngster Prithvi Shaw, who scored his third century in his fourth first-class cricket match yesterday, was gutted after missing out on a possible double century against Tamil Nadu, the same opponents against whom he got his debut ton in the Ranji Trophy semi-finals last season. Shaw's 123 helped Mumbai post 314 for seven on the opening day of the Group C Ranji Trophy match at the MCA-BKC ground. "A double century was not on my mind, but I just wanted to bat as long as possible. I don't know what happens to me after getting to 100. It was a very good opportunity.

"It was challenging to play against Ashwin sir. I missed my double hundred and that hurt the team a bit too," said Shaw, 17, after the day's play yesterday. "I was not thinking too much about Ashwin bowling to me. I just thought if can dominate, it would be a good sign. I was playing him normally as I play all spinners," said Shaw whose innings was laced with 17 fours and two sixes. About his dismissal, he said: "He (Ashwin) tossed the ball up. I thought the ball would turn, but it kept straight and took the edge. The more consistent I am, the better it will be because you don't want to be hit with bad form.

"The selectors would be watching so I think consistency is very important these days. After scoring a hundred and then failing in three to four innings gives no meaning to that century. I've learnt how to be consistent."
