Attempt-to-murder case registered against India pacer after wife Hasin Jahan accuses him of poisoning and torturing her

Police yesterday charged Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami after his wife filed a formal complaint alleging assault, domestic violence and infidelity. Shami's wife Hasin Jahan, a former model, filed a written complaint with the police in Kolkata just days after going public with claims that Shami had affairs with other women. The controversy has already cost Shami, who turned 28 yesterday, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has put his annual contract with the national team on hold while an investigation is conducted.

"Police have charged Indian pacer Mohammed Shami and his brother with sections related to rape, domestic violence and causing hurt with poisoning after Jahan's complaint," Kolkata police joint commissioner Praveen Tripathi told AFP. "She has specifically complained about being tortured by her husband and in-laws, and about her husband having multiple extra-marital affairs," Tripathi added.
The case was registered under non-bailable sections 307 (attempt to murder), 498-A (subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 376 (punishment for rape), Kolkata Police Joint CP (Crime) Praveen Tripathi said. The five have also been booked under bailable sections 323 (causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) among others, he said. Jahan made headlines by making public on Tuesday a series of messages Mohammed Shami allegedly sent to women during their four-year marriage.

"I managed to access the security code in his phone and saw (the) chats last night. I was shocked and could not sleep. He tortured me physically and mentally over and over again. Shami assaulted me after returning from the South Africa tour," Jahan told journalists yesterday. "He has many girlfriends. He has been with prostitutes too. There is a man named Kuldeep, who is in touch with him and other cricketers and arranges for prostitutes. "There is a Pakistani girl too he is involved with," added Jahan, claiming that Shami would deliberately deep her away from cricket tours.
"I used to see other players taking their wives on foreign tours but he never took me because he was up to hi tricks. When I used to ask him he would say that the BCCI has not allowed it or that only two or three senior players are
permitted to bring their wives along."
