US journeyman Ricky Barnes cranked up the pressure on Tiger Woods at the US Open on Saturday as more bad weather swept in.

A former amateur champ and winless since turning pro in 2003, Barnes ended Round Two in the rain-hit tournament on eight under par and was 12 shots better than Woods as the World No 1 began his second round with two straight pars.

Woods could ill-afford a finish similar to the one he had in the first round, when he dropped four strokes in the last four holes. With the early projected cut at five over, Woods was facing the need to at least come in with a 71 with thunderstorms forecast.

"I hit a lot of good shots. Unfortunately I didn't finish I would have liked," Woods said, who is seeking his 15th major, and a second straight US Open to become the first man to successfully defend all four of the majors.
