Put into bat, Punjab scored 238 all out in 49.4 overs with Mayank Sidhana top-scoring with a 66-ball 64 and then their bowlers, led by Kaul (5/32), restricted Hyderabad to 182 for 9 in 42.4 overs to win the match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
Hyderabad's top-scorer Sumanth Kolla retired hurt after scoring 63 from 70 balls.
Seamers M Ravi Kiran (4/33) and Chama Milind (3/62) picked up seven wickets between them, but thirties from Manan Vohra (33), captain Yuvraj Singh (36), Gurkeerat Singh (35) and Gitansh Khera (30), and a more substantial 66-ball 64 from Mayank Sidhana, helped Punjab post a total of 238.
Hyderabad's chase never got going, as Kaul and Barinder Sran (3/36) struck regularly to leave them at 79 for 6.
Sumanth and Pagadala Naidu (35) helped them recover somewhat, but not enough to get close to their target. Their innings folded with 7.2 overs still remaining, with Sumanth unable to bat again after retiring hurt.
