Pakistan coach yearns for some World Cup success after all these years

Waqar Younis has been unfortunate when it has come to World Cups.

In 1992, he had to return home from Australia after suffering a stress fracture in his back. Pakistan, under Imran Khan, went on to win their first World Cup with Waqar's bowling partner Wasim Akram bagging the man of the match award for his all-round showing in the final against England.

In the next World Cup ufffd in 1999 in England ufffdu00a0 Waqar played only one match - against Bangladesh at Northampton which Pakistan lost by 62 runs. He had figures of 2-36.

In 2003, the fast bowling exponent, known for his vicious yorkers, was made the captain of Pakistan. But his team crashed out following a loss to India at Centurion.

Waqar is now coach of Pakistan and hopes to see his country advance to the semi-finals by beating the West Indies hereu00a0today.

"I desperately want to witness some World Cup success even if it is from the sidelines," the 40-year-old Waqar told MiD DAY.

"This team is a very good one because the players are hungry for success. Each and every member of the team wants to contribute in his own way.

"I can see these qualities in our day-to-day interactions. I am confident that we will beat the West Indies. We have the right kind of mix."
