Everton striker Victor Anichebe said he was humiliated and angry after being confronted by police while shopping. The 20-year-old Nigerian and a friend were accosted by cops while looking in a jeweller's shop window in King Street, Cheshire.
Anichebe explained: "I remain deeply upset about the treatment meted out to myself and a friend by the Cheshire Police. We were window-shopping when we found ourselves surrounded by police officers who accused us of attempting to steal watches. Sadly, even when I explained who I was and what I was doing, they continued to treat both of us as not just suspects but as criminals and placed my friend in handcuffs.
The Cheshire Police has apologised to the two men.
