The legal adviser and the family of former Pakistan batsman Ijaz Ahmed have accused police of mentally torturing the ex-cricketer after arresting him for alleged forgery. 
 Ijaz was rushed to hospital in critical condition yesterday after he spent the night at the Gulberg Liberty police station. 
 The batsman has been accused of issuing two fraud cheques of the value of Rs 10.5 million to two property dealers of Vehari town in Punjab over a land deal. 
 Kashif Javed, the lawyer for the former Pakistan player, said his client had been mistreated by the police. "I don't think this is any way to treat a national hero. He was mentally tortured and put in a cell with dacoits, murderers and lunatics," Javed said. 
 Ijaz could not be produced before the magistrate yesterday as Javed said the police had deliberately delayed things and put his client under pressure finally leading to his breakdown. 
 "If the police wanted they could have produced him in court on Friday. We were there early morning waiting for him to proceed to the court so that we could ask for bail from the magistrate," the lawyer said. 
 Ijaz's wife said her husband fell seriously ill due to the ill-treatment at the police station and started vomiting blood before being rushed to the hospital. "We kept on telling the police he is an asthma patient and our family doctor should check him but this was not allowed," she said. I
 jaz's brother-in-law and former Test captain Salim Malik claims the two property dealers had a dispute with Ijaz and had tried to take revenge from him by filing false charges against him. I
 jaz was working as fielding coach with the Pakistan team when arrested and Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Ejaz Butt said this was his personal matter. "If he wants any help from the board we are willing to assist him but this is his personal matter and we don't want to comment on it," Butt said. 
 Ejaz played in 60 Tests and over 200 one-dayers for his country.
