New Zealand used to enter ICC tournaments as underdogs. However, since the 50-over World Cup in 2015, the Kiwis have unleashed a brand of cricket that make them favourites at most events.

In the 2015 World Cup, Kane Williamson’s team finished runners-up. Next year, in the T20 World Cup, they were knocked out in the semis. In the 2019 World Cup, missing the title by a whisker. They finally won an ICC title when they beat India in the World Test Championship final. At the recent T20 World Cup in the UAE, Williamson & Co lost to Australia in the final.

Success formula

Williamson explained how the success formula was working for the Kiwis. “I’ve yet to hear the favourites tag, but yeah for us, it is always about focussing on the bigger picture as a side and trying to put our energy into taking one step ahead.

‘All teams are strong’

“There is a lot of hard work and planning that goes on. But you go to tournaments and every team is strong. If you look at the last T20 World Cup, anybody can beat anybody. There are no promises in those situations, it is about going out there and being prepared to the best of your ability to give yourself the best chance of winning,” the NZ skipper said during a virtual event where Amazon Prime Video announced its multi-year deal with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Monday. “There are a number of challenges along the way, as a side, it is about sticking together and keep moving forward,” he added.
