United States star Michael Phelps sped to victory in the men's 200m butterfly in world record time at the World Championships here yesterday and then said he'd been wearing the wrong swimsuit. The eight gold medal winner from the Beijing Olympics last year won his second gold of this competition and his first individual title here in Rome as he beat his own world record with a time of 1min 51.51sec. And he did it making a mockery of the raging debate about the performance benefits of so-called super-suits as he just wore trousers rather than a body suit. "I had (a suit) to warm up with but when I went back to warm up about half an hour before my race I grabbed the wrong one from the room," he explained. "I had one that I had worn in and broke in a little bit and this one (that he took) was just too tight on the shoulders. "I'd brought my legs just for backup so I just decided to take that one off and throw the legs on. "I've only worn a full body suit one time in the 200m and that was at the Nationals. If you go back to all my races, they've been in a jammer or legs." But Phelps later admitted it had not always been his intention to come to Rome but he did so to please a member of his family. "I did it for my mom, she wanted to come to Rome," he joked. "One reason was my mom did want to come to Rome.
