Rajkot: Yajurvindra Singh, the former Saurashtra captain, who took seven catches (five and two) in his debut Test, against England at Bangalore in 1976-77, is not happy with the current standard of Team India's fielding.
"Though the out-fielding has improved because of the advent of ODIs and Twenty20s, the work in the close-in area leaves much to be desired," the prince of the erstwhile state of Bilkha near Junagadh in Gujarat, told mid-day. "Without helmets, we were more focused and sharper than most of today's close-in fielders.
Eknath Solkar at the forward short-leg was simply outstanding, often unbelievable. In fact, protective gear restrict your body movements a bit and you are not as flexible as you would like to be. Close-in catching in our time was far better," said Yajurvindra (60).
