Sir Garfield Sobers

Sir Garfield Sobers supported Bishan Singh Bedi’s decision to declare India’s first innings closed (306-6 decl) as a protest against West Indies’s intimidatory bowling in the 1976 Jamaica Test. Sobers, who had retired by then, wrote in My Autobiography: “I don’t blame him [Bedi]. In those days, West Indies didn’t have fast bowlers… they had express fast bowlers.” It was believed that Bedi even shut shop in the second innings of the controversial Test match, but later clarified that he declared because he and BS Chandrasekhar had suffered hand injuries while fielding.
