Yashasvi Jaiswal pulled up by selector for T20I debut shot

Mumbai’s young batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal who impressed one and all when he smashed a debut hundred in the opening of the two-Test series against the West Indies in Dominica, was spoken to by a selector about his shot selection after his T20I debut on the same tour.

Jaiswal was picked for Game Three of the T20 series,  but he appeared to be in a hurry to smash the ball around. He played an adventurous shot on his T20I debut in Guyana on August 8, lofting pacer Obed McCoy high up for mid-on fielder Alzarri Joseph to move to his left and pouch the catch. Jaiswal departed for one off two balls.

It is learnt that he was later asked by a selector what made him play that shot. The young batsman is believed to have told the selector that he was told to play in that fashion. He was then urged to hang around and anchor the innings in future. Jaiswal appeared to have listened to the selector and worked his way to an unbeaten 84 in the next game which India won by nine wickets. He scored five in the last game of the series which the hosts won to clinch the series 3-2.

Incidentally, the selector also said that the committee was surprised that Jaiswal was not part of the team for the first two T20Is. After all, he had enjoyed a good IPL 2023 with Rajasthan Royals for whom he scored 625 runs in 14 games at 48.08, with one hundred against Mumbai Indians on April 30. After all this, we can report that the selectors are happy with one of India’s brightest talents.
