Born in New Zealand, Ben Stokes is the son of rugby league player Gerard Stokes. He moved to England after his father was appointed head coach of Workington Town rugby league club. Ben Stokes played cricket for the Cockermouth Cricket Club while in school and went on to win the North Lancashire Cumbria Cricket League
Apart from his heroics on the field, Ben Stokes is also known to be quite a controversial character outside the pitch. On 25th September 2017, Ben Stokes was involved in a brawl in Bristol. The incident took place just hours after England had played a one-day international against the West Indies in the city

On the night of the brawl, allegedly, Ben Stokes offered the club's door supervisor Andrew Cunningham 60 pounds, then 300 pounds, for entry, and became abusive when this was refused. Two gay men, Kai Barry and William O'Connor, emerged from the nightclub and began talking to Stokes and Hales.
Following this, Ben Stokes allegedly got into a brawl. A fight ensued and a 27-year-old man allegedly suffered a fractured eye socket and a bloody nose and Ben Stokes was identified as the main aggressor. Following the incident, Stokes lost his England vice-captaincy and also his place in the team for the Ashes tour. He was charged with affray for the brawl but in a court verdict, he was found not guilty and he returned to the England squad.
A prosecutor described Ben Stokes as being 'provocative and offensive' and in an 'angry state of mind' before the alleged fight.
