Crystal Palace rallied from a goal down to beat Liverpool and win the 2025 FA Community Shield, emerging triumphant after a penalty shootout that ended 3-2 following a frenetic match which saw the score dead-locked at 2-2 once the full-time whistle was blown.
Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson wrote his name into the club’s history books by denying two penalties from Alexis MacAllister and Harvey Elliot soon after Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah smashed his spot kick over the bar. For Palace, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Ismaila Sarr and Justin Devenny scored their penalties.
Earlier, Liverpool drew first blood with new striker Hugo Ekitike endearing himself to the Reds fans in just the fourth minute. The former Eintracht Frankfurt forward drove the ball past a diving Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson from the edge of the box, after a neat exchange with Florian Wirtz.
However, Palace would not be deterred, and soon won a penalty after Virgil van Dijk’s lazy tackle on Sarr. Mateta calmly swept the ensuing penalty into the right corner, sending Liverpool custodian Alisson the wrong way.
