Rodrygo upset over Ballon d’Or snub: I think I deserved it

Following the announcement of the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’Or trophy, one of the biggest individual honours in football, Real Madrid forward Rodrygo is ‘upset’ his name was not amongst the nominees. Also Read: Holy Cross girls edge out Apostolic Carmel 2-1 Five players for Los Blancos were included in the shortlist, including the likes of Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham, Toni Kroos (now retired), Federico Valverde and Dani Carvajal. But the Brazilian, who scored 17 goals and provided nine assists, was not included. “I was upset, I think I deserved it. I don’t want to belittle the players who are there, but I think I had a place in the 30. It was a surprise... But there’s not much I can do, I’m not the one who decides these things,” said Rodrygo to ESPN. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Holy Cross girls edge out Apostolic Carmel 2-1

With goals on either side of half-time, Holy Cross Convent (Mira Road) beat Apostolic Carmel (Bandra) 2-1 in the girls under-16 second division playoff of the MSSA inter-school football tournament at St Francis D’Assisi ground, Borivli, on Monday. By virtue of this well-deserved victory, Holy Cross, who found their goals through captain Fleur Gomes and Giselle D’Souza in the afternoon fixture, booked their place in the quarter-finals, where they will meet Don Bosco International (Matunga). Also Read: Superb sub Ron! Holy Cross made a dream start to the proceedings, taking the lead in the third minute when Fleur executed a composed side-footed finish inside the box to find the bottom corner after receiving a square pass from Trisha Shetty. Holy Cross continued to dominate possession as they looked to extend their lead. However, against the run of play, Apostolic Carmel equalised in the closing stages of the first half when an unmarked Cassandra D’Mello tapped home following a flag-kick by Adelia Picardo from the right. Undeterred by the equaliser, Holy Cross once again secured the lead through Giselle early in the second half. She executed a neat finish to complement the work done by teammate Ame Monteiro down the right. Earlier, in another playoff encounter, Army School (Colaba) recorded a 1-0 win over Billabong International (Mulund). Shikha Kumari scored with a left-footed strike at the stroke of half-time.

Superb sub Ron!

Cristiano Ronaldo is showing just why Portugal are persisting with him at the age of 39. Make that a record-extending 132 international goals for the five-time world player of the year after Ronaldo came on as a half-time substitute and slotted home an 88th-minute winner for Portugal in their 2-1 victory over Scotland in the Nations League on Sunday. Ron struck both posts Minutes earlier, Ronaldo had struck both posts within a matter of seconds. Indeed, he was an ever-present danger in Lisbon, demonstrating he is far from finished as a force in international soccer — especially against the likes of a struggling Scotland. Scotland went ahead through Scott McTominay in the seventh minute before an equaliser from the edge of the area by Bruno Fernandes in the 54th. Meanwhile, Luka Modric turns 39 on Monday but, like Ronaldo, remains as integral as ever for his country. Modric scores as Croatia win  The Real Madrid midfielder again demonstrated his enduring quality by clipping home an exquisite free kick from the edge of the box in Croatia’s 1-0 win over Poland. It was Modric’s 27th goal in 180 appearances for his country, which left him tied with former Spain defender Sergio Ramos as the second highest-capped European players in men’s international football — behind Ronaldo at 214. In another match, Fabian Ruiz scored twice for Spain in their 4-1 win over Switzerland, with the recently crowned European champions emerging victorious despite playing the majority of the game with only 10 men. Centre back Robin Le Normand was shown a straight red card in the 20th minute for bringing down Breel Embolo as the last man. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Will be difficult for us and Syria: India coach Marquez

India and Syria will go head-to-head in the winner-takes-it-all third and final game of the Intercontinental Cup here on Monday. India, who began the competition with a goalless draw against Mauritius on Tuesday, are eyeing their second consecutive Intercontinental Cup football triumph, and third overall. Syria beat Mauritius 2-0 on Friday, which means they hold a slight advantage heading into the final game as the Eagles of Qasioun require only a draw to claim the trophy. Syria have a long history of playing tournaments in India, but the title has always evaded them.  Also Read: Randhir Singh becomes first Indian to be elected as OCA prez The West Asians lost back-to-back Nehru Cup finals to India in 2007 and 2009 before finishing fourth in 2012. In their last trip to India in the 2019 Intercontinental Cup, Syria ended in third place. But for the Blue Tigers to deny them first silverware on Indian soil, they will need to end a winless streak stretching back to November last year. “It will be a difficult game for both sides. It’s a friendly game, but the team who wins the game wins the trophy. We expect to play a good game and win the tournament,” said India head coach Manolo Marquez, who celebrated his 56th birthday on Saturday. Ireland fans prove they haven't forgiven Rice and Grealish

England players Declan Rice and Jack Grealish were targeted by protesting Ireland fans during the UEFA Nations League match. Both former Ireland players responded to the jeers in perfect fashion with goals in a 2-0 win at Aviva Stadium. One banner had pictures of Rice and Grealish alongside the words. The snakes are back. Rice opened the scoring in the 11th minute but didn't celebrate. We both enjoyed our time playing here. I certainly did, Grealish said. I have a lot of Irish in my family, so there's no bad blood whatsoever from my side. Rice made three appearances for Ireland before opting to represent England, where he has become a key figure in the team as one of the best midfielders in Europe. Grealish, who became a British record signing when joining Manchester City for 100 million pounds ($139 million) in 2021, played for Ireland at youth level and then chose to pursue a career with England. Both players were born in England but eligible to represent Ireland. England interim manager Lee Carsley also represented Ireland as a player when he made 40 appearances for the senior team. He was also born in England. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Mbappe confident of France return after Euro flop show

Kylian Mbappe returns to action for France for the first time since Euro 2024 in Friday’s UEFA Nations League clash against Italy, with the superstar forward insisting he is not dwelling on that disappointing campaign. The 25-year-old will lead France in the heavyweight encounter in Paris as Les Bleus take to the field again, two months on from losing to eventual champions Spain in the semi-finals at the Euros. It was a poor tournament in particular for Mbappe, who suffered a broken nose in France’s opening game and only scored one goal, a penalty in a group-stage draw with Poland.  Also Read: Bergwijn lashes out at Dutch boss Koeman It was put to the new Real Madrid signing that he might be keen to make up for that in the match at the Parc des Princes and Monday’s meeting with Belgium, but Mbappe dismissed that suggestion. “Maybe it comes with age, but I have learned that it is not about revenge,” he told reporters on Thursday. “Everything is a process, and what went well or not so well last year will help me this year.” The Nations League is the next objective for Didier Deschamps and his team, before qualifying for the 2026 World Cup begins this year. Mbappe and France, who will also face Israel in League A, Group 2, won the Nations League in 2021, when they defeated Spain in the final in Milan. The former Paris Saint-Germain player admitted, however, that he was not sure how to feel about the tournament. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Steven Bergwijn

Bergwijn lashes out at Dutch boss Koeman

Dutch forward Steven Bergwijn completed his switch from Ajax to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad earlier this week, following which, Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman had stated Bergwijn’s time with the national team is over due to a lack of sporting ambition. Also Read: Ron on a roll! The forward has now hit back at the head coach, stating he does not want to play for Koeman anymore. “I don’t even want to play for this manager anymore. I won’t play for someone who portrays me like he has done in the media. He could have called me, hear my side of the story. How can he say such things without talking to me?,” said Bergwijn to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. Bergwijn made his Netherlands debut in 2018 under current head coach Ronald Koeman and has gone on to represent the Oranjes on 35 occasions. He has also scored eight goals and provided three assists in these outings. Ajax will receive a transfer fee of over 21 million euros from the Saudi Arabian club.
