Bopanna, who came through the qualifiers to make the main draw, matched Gonzalez in the aces, firing 12 each, but was broken twice in the match which lasted nearly an hour and a half.
The 447th- ranked Indian, who is making a comeback after a three months lay-off due to a troublesome knee, had shocked World No. 51 Argentine Jose Acasuso in the first round.
