Matunga team ride on 14-year-old's brace to beat Maharashtra Military School 3-0 and claim District Sports Office U-15 title
Riding on Bryce Miranda’s brace, Don Bosco (Matunga) representing Mumbai City defeated Maharashtra Military School (MMS) of Thane district 3-0 to lift the District Sports Office (DSO) sub-junior Nehru Cup boys’ U-15 hockey title at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Kandivali ground on Saturday.

The Matunga side will now travel to Kolhapur for the Jawaharlal Nehru Cup sub-junior hockey tournament to be held from September 27. Bryce gave the Matunga outfit the lead in the 13th minute scoring off a reverse pass by Keegan D’Souza. Don Bosco completely dominated proceedings thereafter and although they failed to score more goals, they led 1-0 at half time.
Marc D’Souza, converted a penalty corner for Don Bosco in the 22nd minute. Bryce added to his tally in the 32nd minute as Bosco won the title for the 10th time. u00a0Bryce, who also plays football for his school, said hockey has helped him improve his reflexes. “I started playing football in Class II and hockey in Class III. I love hockey, but I can never stop playing football.
“Hockey helps me stay quick on the field. We knew that the final against MMS wouldn’t be easy as they played really well in the semi-final yesterday,” the 14-year-old Dadar resident told SUNDAY MiD DAY.
Bryce is looking forward to being a part of the school’s hockey team that will represent the district at the state level tournament in Kolhapur. u00a0“This will be the first time I will get a chance to represent my school at the state level in hockey. I am looking forward to do well in Kolhapur,” said the class IX student.
Meanwhile, St Andrew’s Junior College (Bandra) representing Mumbai Suburban defeated St Xavier’s (CST) from Mumbai City 4-2 via penalty strokes to emerge winners in the U-17 category.u00a0
