World No 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark defeated Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-1, 6-3 in a third round match at the 4.5 million Indian Wells WTA tournament last night.

Wozniacki needed just 71 minutes to dispatch Sanchez, winning 85 per cent of her second serve opportunities and saving two break points. She was posting her first victory over the Spaniard in four career meetings.

Wozniacki moves on to the fourth round where she will face the winner of a match between Russian Alisa Kleybanova and 13th seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy.

Indian tussle
Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi beat Sweden's Simon Aspelin and Julian Knowle of Austria 7-5, 6-4 to set up an interesting clash with Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan in the men's doubles pre-quarter-finals.
