The Frenchman, who won his sixth career title last month in Metz, will next face former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, who saw off compatriot Marcel Granollers 6-4, 6-4.
Tsonga, the world number seven, won in 76 minutes, firing eight aces and breaking his opponent's serve three times as the gap in experience and quality showed. Tsonga. said: "On paper I was better than him, but on the court it's different. It was not easy today and I'm happy to win, even if I was supposed to."
Meanwhile, in the women's draw too the top seed, Caroline Wozniacki registered a routine pre-quarter-final win over Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3). But, there was disappointment for second seed Victoria Azarenka, forced to pull out with a foot injury againstu00a0 Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
