India's cricketing stars Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh were willing to help the striking hockey players last morning when batting legend Sunil Gavaskar met them before yesterday's tri-series final against Sri Lanka.

Gavaskar is a keen follower of hockey and did not shy away from expressing his opinion when the International Hockey Federation threatened to take the 2010 World Cup hockey away from India if things didn't improve in the running of the then Indian Hockey Federation in 2008.

"To the best of knowledge, World Cups in all sports are allotted on the criteria ofu00a0 rotation, good ground venues, easy transportation from overseas as well within the host country and proper accommodation for the participants. These would be the minimum standards that would be imposed by world bodies and there maybe some others that are specific to different sports but to have a condition that unless a project to improve the country's hockey and to appoint an overseas consultant was not implemented then the hosting rights would be not given or taken away is strange indeed," wrote Gavaskar in his April 2008 column.
