The top seed will face fellow countryman Janko Tipsarevic on Sunday. He overcame India's Somdev Devvarman 6-3 3-6 6-4 to reach the last four in his hometown tournament for the first time. World number 37 Feliciano Lopez continued his renaissance with a 6-4 6-4 win over Albert Montanes.
Having already dumped out the Juan Monaco and Fernando Gonzalez, Lopez saved five break points and took his chances when they came along. He will take on Filippo Volandri after the Italian needed 83 minutes to beat Marcel Granollers 6-2 6-4. It will be Volandri's first ATP semi-final in three years.
