It was a crucial drive by the Briton with front row of the grid likely to be decisive on the bumpy Marina Bay street circuit where overtaking will be possible, but difficult.

Fernando Alonso brought some cheer to Renault with a place on the third row along with Timo Glock in his Toyota.
"I'm very, very happy and pleased for the team," said Hamilton, the defending world champion who has no chance of retaining his title.
"Friday practice was not special for me so I came in with a positive approach today. The guys rebuilt the car and they did a great job."
Hamilton had a wiring problem with his car but it was fixed overnight.
Championship leader Jenson Button failed to get his Brawn into the top 10, with the Briton starting the race in 12th.
