Hockey Olympian John Mascarenhas no more

Former hockey Olympian John Mascarenhas breathed his last peacefully on May 25 at his Kotachiwadi, Girgaum residence. He was in his late 70s.

A former double blue — hockey and football — the speedy left winger was an Alumni of St Xavier's College.

He joined Burmah-Shell in the late 50s and played under Olympian Walter D'Souza. Mascarenhas was the lone Mumbai player in the 1960 Olympic Games at Rome.

There were two others from Mumbai — Joseph Antic and Erman Sebastian — but since both were employed with Western and Central Railways respectively, they went under the nomenclature of Indian Railways.

In football, he was known for his speedy runs on the wing and sending lofty crosses across goal-mouths.
