How the sporting world moved ahead after 26/11

It is not said without good reason that sport breaks boundaries. Despite terror attacks striking Mumbai on November 26, 2008, sportspersons were soon back in action.

MiD DAY comes up with some examples over the last one year which indicate how 26/11 was well and truly put behind in a sporting sense:

Kevin Pietersen

Good English
The terror attacks in Mumbai took place during England's cricket tour of India.

In fact, the Indians and Englishmen had just finished their one-day international at Cuttack where the hosts won by six wickets on that fateful day.

Kevin Pietersen's team was due to come back after a break to play the two-match Test series.u00a0Expecting them to play the Mumbai Test was too much to ask, but to their detractors' surprise, they returned to India to play in Chennai. Pietersen's team was naturally hailed and they deserved all the accolades. The Englishmen lost the first Test and drew the second and final one in Mohali.

In Chennai, Tendulkar scored a dream hundred in a tough fourth-innings chase. His unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 163 in 43 overs with Yuvraj Singh (85) saw India through and he dedicated his ton to the people of Mumbai.

Back in Mumbai
A little more than a year after 26/11, there will be a Test in Mumbai the India vs Sri Lanka battle at the Brabourne Stadium (Dec 2-6). With the on-going Kanpur Test set to end in a stalemate, Mumbai could provide a result to the three-match series. A few weeks ago, the Australians were in the city for their ODI against India which was washed out at Navi Mumbai.

The great run
Two months after the Mumbai attacks, the city hosted the international marathon and participants stayed at The Trident which was attacked too alongwith the Taj.

The marathoners are not as famous as cricketers and other sports stars, but they are human and fear for their lives too. To run in Mumbai must have taken some guts.

Serve and volley
Despite security fears, American volleyball administrators sent their team to participate in the World Under-21 meet in Pune last August. However, the Americans did not fare too well after being eliminated before the semi-final stage.

Fearless hoopsters
Earlier this month, Shooting for Success, an American team visited Mumbai to play in the Savio Cup basketball tournament in Matunga. Like their volleyball team, they too didn't hit the high notes.
