I expected Roger Federer's upset, says Paes

Even as Argentine Juan Martin del Potro shocked many in the tennis world with his first Grand Slam title at the US Open on Monday beating five-time champion Roger Federer 3-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2, I had predicted his victory to my mates here on Sunday.

In fact, I expected him to win in four sets because he had some crucial early breaks which he failed to take.

Potro is one of the best examples of the new generation tennis player, who is all set to take over the reins from the Rafael Nadals and Roger Federers.

Some believe that at 6 ft 6 inches, he's too tall to play good tennis and will particularly struggle while making low volleys. But, the way he moved against Federer in the final would have silenced most critics. Besides, given his big serves and power-packed baseline play, where's the need to make low volleys?

Most of his volleys are simple put-aways, because he comes to the net with such well-executed approach shots and that leaves him in a great position to meet the volleys.

I think as time goes by, we will see Potro climb higher than his current World No 6 ranking. At 20, he's still very young and going by the amount of hard work he puts in, he definitely holds a lot of promise for the future.
