Having been unanimously elected president of the Gujarat Cricket Association, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi may have become the latest political bigwig to enter the Indian cricket administration scene. But the insiders hope that Modi will help revive the financial condition of cricketers in the state.
"Let's hope the Modi magic works in cricket administration as well," a senior BCCI functionary said, requesting anonymity.
"Just like some of the other political leaders have succeeded in increasing job opportunities for cricketers, I sincerely hope Modi ends up doing the same in Gujarat."
Spelling out his plans, Modi said, "We will try and create an environment where cricketers and other sportspersons get respect and pride."
