It was just a few short weeks ago that Mahalaxmi was witness to a record-breaking Indian Derby. Having hardly had time to catch one's breath after such a mammoth show, the grandest and greatest race of them all, The Indian Turf Invitation Cup returns to Mumbai after an all too long break of six years. On the cards is a weekend of the highest standard of racing with champions from all India, unprecedented prize money and off track entertainment to keep all in good spirit.
The Invitation Cup and its three associated Grade 1 races are held annually by rotation at the five major racing centers and its Mumbai's turn after 2004. Sponsored by first time entrants Hirco Developments and The Vandrevala Foundation, the ambience will be one of style and splendour as the Vandrevala family seeks to replicate the fashionable environs of such major sporting spectacles as Wimbledon and Royal Ascot.
The Vandrevala Foundation Indian Turf Invitation Cup itself will see a heroic battle between Jacqueline, the world record breaking star filly who is set to break every record in Indian racing and a worthy challenger in Becket, a mighty handsome horse, who will need just a little change ofu00a0 luck and probably some change in strategy to stop the Pesi Shroff trained filly's relentless victorious run. A battle that in should ensure a packed crowd, perhaps for the last time this season.
The Invitation Cup day features a power packed nine race card of outstanding quality. The first 5,000 in the public enclosure get free entry and a million rupees added to the super jackpot should make this pool a big draw.
Battle royale
The Invitation Cup sees a battle royale between the all conquering Jacqueline and the pretender to the throne, Becket. It's the champion versus the challengeru00a0-- a momentous battle on the turf is on the cards!
There will be much to cheer for the fashionistas and glitterati as an internationally flown in fire and ice show will hold centre stage on the lawns as well live music through the afternoon.
Star value
Those hungry for a taste of more than just good food, will probably find Bollywood stars Bipasha Basu and Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor. The RWITC who maintains a stellar record in its unending scroll of honours has a winner in the Invitation Cup sponsors. Hirco and the Vandrevalas have walked several extra miles to showcase India's premier racing event in all its glory and splendour.
