The 42-year-old veteran of 276 starts and 91 wins, including four on home soil, clocked the fifth best time in yesterday afternoon's second free practice session to wind up one place ahead of team-mate and compatriot Nico Rosberg.
The German legend said: "I'm quite happy with the work that we achieved today and we are going in a good direction.
"We are continually developing our car and days like today help that process.u00a0 Mark Webber topped the times for Red Bull at the end of two opening practice sessions. The 34-year-old Australian, who won the last race on the circuit in 2009, clocked a fastest time of one minute and 31.770 seconds to outpace Fernando Alonso of Ferrari by one-tenth of a second.
The Spanish two-time champion Spaniard was himself two-tenths of a second clear of Webber's teammate and German defending champion Sebastian Vettel. Alonso's Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa was fourth.
