Hamilton's victory in China nearly five weeks ago raised hopes of a potential title tilt, only for McLaren to be trounced by Red Bull and Vettel in Turkey earlier this month.
In finishing fourth, and team-mate Jenson Button sixth, the British duo find themselves 34 and 47 points adrift respectively of Vettel, who has won the other three races this season.
McLaren, however, have a raft of upgrades on their car ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, up to 12 according to engineering director Tim Goss, dependent on whether all of them work. Hamilton would now love nothing more than to score his first triumph in Barcelona, and follow that up a week later with success on the streets of Monaco.
Hamilton said: "I've never won in Spain, so of course I'd like to win there. It'd be great to win there. I've been close as I've finished second before, and I was nearly second last year until the last lap when a wheel fell off, or broke. But I think we'll be competitive there. We're optimistic we'll again be back in the fight for the big points this weekend."
