In so doing, three-time Olympic gold medallist Lochte made it a golden hat-trick at the event having Thursday set the first individual world swimming record since the banning of hi-tech bodysuits at the start of the year in winning the 400m individual medley, shaving nearly two seconds faster off the previous mark.

On Wednesday, 26-year-old Lochte had also won the 200m freestyle. Yesterday's race he sped to victory ahead of Rogan, who touched in 1:52.90 with Clary timing 1:53.56.

There was further gold for the US contingent when Ariana Kukors won the women's 100m relay in 58.95sec. And in the women's 400m freestyle, Kathryn Hoff timed 3:57.07 to see off Australia's Kylie Palmer (3:58.39) and Italy's Federica Pellegrini (3:59.52).
