Though life for the Karikars was never a bed of roses, they managed to make ends meet. For, they had each other by their side to tackle any crisis.

But fate plays games cruel ones at times.

Supriya Karikar was dealt with one unkind blow when her husband went missing in 2005. And, as hope of his return began to diminish, Supriya's determination to raise both her children with dignity and chart out a bright future for them grew hurriedly.

The priority was to make ends meet. So, she landed a job as a caretaker at Wadala's St Joseph's, a school where her son Abu Jaffer Karikar studied.

That was a temporary arrangement though. She moved on to work as a full-time maid where she usually puts in around 12-16 hours a day in a home for the aged.

"My husband took care of everything when he was around. It is very difficult without him, but I do all it takes to see my children do well,"u00a0 Supriya told MiD DAY yesterday. She has spared no effort to boost Abu Jaffer's sporting pursuits.u00a0

Abu Jaffer won his first round match but lost to Kevin Shah in the second round (5-11, 8-11 and 6-11) in the Nike MSSA inter-school table tennis tournament for boys under-12 at the University Sports Pavilion yesterday.u00a0

Though he ended up losing in the second round, Abu Jaffer was determined to do well in future and promised to put in a lot of hard work. "I will dedicate more time for practice and one day will become a champion," he assured in the presence of his proud mother.

Win or a lose, Supriya is always proud of her son's achievements.u00a0 "I feel very proud when I see my son playing. I hope that one day he could represent India."
