"I hit it pretty bad on the rim," said James, who had with 34 points and nine assists, but also had six turnovers and connected on only 3 of 7 in the fourth period.
"It's like you hit your funny bone, but it's not funny at all."
In fact, the Cavaliers had little to smile about. Shaquille O'Neal and Anderson Varejao were out injured, and no other Cleveland player scored more than 10 points. None reached double figures in rebounds or assists.
"In general, our entire team - including LeBron - brought the ball to a standstill," Cavs coach Mike Brown said, "which allows them to do whatever they did defensively."
James, who had ice on his wrist after the game, noted the Wizards' 35-15 edge in free throws.
"They definitely got to the free-throw line way more than we did. We feel we attacked at times, and we didn't get the whistle."
James said he hurt his wrist on a dunk that closed Cleveland's scoring with more than two minutes to play.
"Didn't feel good at the time," said James, who added that he hurt the same wrist earlier this season.
Antawn Jamison, making his season debut after hurting his right shoulder in an exhibition game against Cleveland, scored 31 points with 10 rebounds to help the Wizards end a six-game losing streak.
"Whether we miss a couple of shots or make a run, guys run to the huddle with their heads down, and that's something that I knew that I could come in and change," said Jamison, who made 12 of 22 shots.
"I've been sitting down for what seems like forever, so I had a lot of energy. I knew it was going to be different."
