New York: World number one Novak Djokovic claimed his second US Open title and 10th career Grand Slam after defeating Roger Federer in a pulsating four-set finale at Flushing Meadows.

The Serbian saved 19 of 23 break points as he secured a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over Federer in a gruelling contest that lasted three hours and 20 minutes to win his third major of the year.

Djokovic had to battle past not only the Swiss second seed but a pro-Federer crowd after rain delayed the start of game for more than three hours.

Although Federer staged a stunning comeback to clinch the second set, he squandered too many chances to lose the momentum in the next set.

The top seed also saw another comeback from Federer despite breaking the Swiss twice to lead 5-2 in the fourth.

Djokovic then held his nerve as the 17-time Grand Slam champion squandered three more chances to level at 5-5, which subsequently paved the way for the Serbian to win the championship point.

With the win, Djokovic also leveled his FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Federer at 21-21.
