Switzerland's Wawrinka, (30) has won the last two editions of the tournament — to add to his victory from 2011 — and last year beat Britain's Aljaz Bedene in the final.

The Chennai Open will kick off the ATP's 2016 calendar on January 4, as the focus slowly moves towards the year's opening Grand Slam in Australia. Wawrinka, who won the French Open in 2015, will again join Bedene at the Chennai Open, with South Africa's Kevin Anderson, France's Benoit Paire, and Spain's Roberto Bautista-Agut among others. "I've always enjoyed coming to Chennai," Wawrinka said.
"The tournament is a nice way to start the season, the fans are great and I like the atmosphere in the stadium. Of course I would love to defend my title, but I will have to go match by match."
Wawrinka's 2015 season had been a relatively productive one given his victory at Roland Garros, which followed a semi-final finish in Melbourne, before he made the last eight at Wimbledon and the last four at the US Open. The Swiss finished off the 2015 ATP calendar losing in the semis at the World Tour Finals in London to compatriot Roger Federer.
"I want to continue to win tournaments and go deep at the Slams. And hopefully I get a great start into the season in Chennai again."
