Former Mumbai cricket captain Shishir Hattangadi returned to his alma mater St Mary's ISCE, Mazgaon recently as chef guest at a function to mark the end of a summer coaching camp for under-13 and under-15 boys. Hattangadi highlighted the importance of a school's backing in order to produce champions. "I was delighted that a camp was organised at the school which has won inter-school competitions in the 1970s. The support of the school authorities is critical. St Mary's ISCE have produced a good number of club players. Some of us like Vijay Mohanraj, Jignesh Sanghani, Rajesh Sanghi and Mazhar Ghadially went on to play first-class cricket. Nakul Rege was quite a star on the Mumbai scene in the mid-1970s and Salil Shah played for Dadar Union for a number of years. Pedigree shouldn't be ignored "The school has a huge advantage of having a ground at their disposal and they should thrive on this," said Hattangadi, a member of the 1975 batch. St Mary's won the Giles Shield by beating Sachin Tendulkar's Shardashram Vidyamandir in 1988.u00a0 The team was then coached by Kiran Ashar, the former Mumbai wicketkeeper-batsman.
