US tennis star Monica Puig says she will do everything possible to get the island back to normalcy after Hurricane Maria devastated it more than a month ago
Tennis star Monica Puig, said that though Puerto Rico is a part of America, she will always consider herself to be Puerto Rican first and American second and that she will do everything she can to get back her hometown to normalcy. Hurricane Maria devastated the island more than a month ago. Puig, who became the first Puerto Rican ever to win a gold medal at the Olympic games, has already raised more than $150,000 as a part of the YouCaring campaign. "Right now our priority is to make sure that the Puerto Rican people feel like somebody has their backs, and in this moment they can count on me.

Our goal right now is to continue to raise awareness, and to continue to see what people actually need. People need medical attention and they need hot food — they can't be living off of sandwiches forever," Puig told Vogue magazine. "I really hope that even the people who have left, eventually, when they realise that Puerto Rico is coming back strong, come back, because there's no place like home. For me, Puerto Rico has that special place in my heart. I'll never get tired of coming back here," she added.
